LEOBLU and the anthemic / empowered pull of "backlash" (Official Video)

"You taught me how to pray / You showed me how to lie / You told me i should smile / Just not that wide / Whisper in my ear / Sharp as knife / A thick coat of / ice..."

The self empowered, deep cut grooves of "backlash" by LEOBLU, the solo project of Berlin-based artist and producer Julia Carlsson, is intriguing from the onset. The well articulated tacky bass lines, and not tacky as in cheapily showy but as tactile and sticky, adhering to you tightly, is pushed by a beat with a propulsive kick provides an emotional urgency for Carlsson's self aware vocal countenance. I love how she phrases her vocal melodies against that beat especially on the chorus where she rushes some but then parses out specific lyrical words sort of between beats. YOU cannot help but sing-a-long. This anthemic track is the second release ahead of her upcoming EP, “Blu Lucid Nightmare,” that dropped on July 26th.

And her lyrics, some barbed, some reflective affirmations are wonderfully drawn.

"I learnt it from the best
I used your mirror
To turn sunlight into fire
If only this and that
If you wanted to you would
And now you should..."

LINER NOTES:

[“backlash” stands as a triumphant declaration of self-liberation and empowerment. It emerges from a place of anger but carries an underlying current of freedom and joy, encapsulating the journey of breaking free from oppressive relationships and embracing one’s true self. The song delves deep into the emotional turmoil of feeling suppressed by someone close, a person who professes love but acts as a significant detractor. With raw and resonant lyrics, LEOBLU portrays the moment of clarity and the exhilarating release from such toxic constraints.]

“This song comes from a place of feeling suppressed and pushed down by someone close to you, someone who claims to love you but constantly keeps you down,” LEOBLU explains. “‘backlash’ is about finally breaking free and becoming the person they always tried to keep you from becoming. You can finally see clearly, you finally become yourself, and you are free. Essentially, you have become their ultimate backlash.”

[Accompanying the release of “backlash” is a visually striking music video shot in the historic Townhall of Mariehamn on the Åland Islands. The video, shot by LEOBLU’s brother Jonathan Carlsson, adds a deeply personal touch to the project. Jonathan’s keen eye and familial connection bring an authentic feel to the video, further enriching the narrative of liberation and self-discovery.]

“I’ve never done a music video like this before,” LEOBLU shares. “I never thought I would dance like this in a music video, actually. I’m so happy that I’ve reached a point where I feel completely comfortable doing this. This video means especially a lot to me since I filmed it with my brother Jonathan. He’s such a talented videographer, and I love collaborating with him in this creative way. The location for the video is also close to my heart, since it’s the local Townhall in the small town where I’m from, where my father has worked since forever. The music video became this whole little family project, and I feel so grateful for that. And I feel so, so proud of the result!”

Julia Carlsson wrote and produced "backlash" and it is stunning in terms of it's sonics, the way she embellishes the track in subtle ways. Even the harmonies are dones in a less is more way like the whole song is done. Too many productions seem to throw too much against the sonic wall without much forethought but not here. Great track.

"Consider me your backlash
Consider me your bad karma
Yeah
I am bad like that
Consider me your backlash
Consider this a reminder
To leave me in your past..."

LEOBLU is the solo project by Julia Carlsson — an artist and producer whose creative journey begins on the Nordic islands of Åland, and unfolds against the backdrop of Berlin's indie scene.

It's a dark and lucid dream-pop soundscape of bombastic minimalism, where reverbed harmonies are layered upon harmonies, accompanied by hauntingly raw lyrics that strike deep, emotional chords.

In the world of LEOBLU, truth and fiction dance in mesmerising synchrony.
