Eggshells and the abstract fusions and midnight moves of "Telegram"

"You want to feel that flame / that path is paved in madness / Beyond the bounds of self / beyond all bounds of sadness..."

Stepping into the bluesy, swanky, post punk funk hybrid "Telegram" by Seattle's experimental pop band Eggshells, the trio of Peter Verdoes (In Praise of Folly, Can the Boy Tell Time), brother Benjamin Verdoes (Iska Dhaaf, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, In Praise of Folly) and Sera Han and I, personally, feel a late 90's vibe. A dense vibe that feels so slinky, so house, so much a purr than a bark but with a lush bite just the same while floating in a melancholy haze. While it may be a foolish thing to describe the sound in terms of instrumentation I think in terms of atmospheres it feels (to me) like a cross pollination of things and of mediums, part Baz Luhrmann, part Garbage, part Beach House filtered through a David Lynchian lens, part St. Vincent filtered through a St. Vincent lens, part Oracular Spectacular, part Sneaker Pimps, part Portishead. I dig it.

LINER NOTES:

[Like much of Eggshells' work, "Telegram" was initially constructed around guitar loops and drums. The lead single from the Seattle band's upcoming nine-song fourth album, "Phases" (Jenny Invert Records), "Telegram" is a swirling meditation on fading passions and abandoned ideals.]

[For the first time in nearly three years Eggshells will return to performing live, debuting material from the upcoming album at Tacoma's Porchfest on July 20th, with a number of shows to be announced over the summer.]

Sway and vibe to "Telegram", preferrably looking up at a midnight back sky while singing along.

"You want to feel that flame
that path is paved in madness
Beyond the bounds of self
beyond all bounds of sadness
Constrain a constant call
contained in silence
Bye bye
You wanted to torch the scene
you should have known it was pointless
And the night it came apart
you were swept away in nonsense
Along a fraying seam
among the fragile congregants
Along a fraying seam
of forgotten garments"

Seattle's experimental pop band Eggshells is the trio of Peter Verdoes (In Praise of Folly, Can the Boy Tell Time), brother Benjamin Verdoes (Iska Dhaaf, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, In Praise of Folly) and Sera Han, who create robustly ethereal deep-space synth and guitar loops, anchored in moody trip-hop beats and wrapped in a lo-fi veneer and garage rock sensibility.

The group's upcoming spectral eight-song album, Hopeless Romancers (January 15, 2021, Jenny Invert Records), is a thematic exploration of the highs, lows, and endless tribulations of online dating through the lens of co-vocalist Sera Han’s experiences as a queer first-generation Korean American navigating the chaotic world of modern relationships. The dark, layered soundscapes of Hopeless Romancers intertwine with the emotional fragility of shadowy vocals, creating a striking and gorgeous collection of songs.
