Todd Binder and the runaway indie rock twang of "Easy Kinda"

"You ain’t got a bag / To breathe in / You’re holdin’ your breath / I’m just squeezin’ ...my heart is a rag / Why do you / Save up that love that you have? / Aw baby / If you need to be alone / I’m not mad..."

"Easy Kinda" by Marin County, California by way of  Charlottesville, Virginia alt-indie rocker Todd Binder starts off like a Pink Floydian piece of psychedelia midstream and then almost instantly shifts into something else all together. The musical sense is a lot of thing: 70's folk influenced rock, 80's new wave southern rock, 90's jazz dipped folk fused indie all coalesced into current everything goes blendo rock. Gluing all the sounds, artistic attitudes together is Binder's amazingly punchy fluid vocal countenance. From his very first vocal attack including yelps, wails, croons and the equivalent of a guitar twang, it is very evident that not only does this guy have killer folk rock pipes but that he feels everything he sings. While his voice is unique I thought of iconic voices like J.D. Souther, Tom Petty, David Eugene Edwards (Sixteen Horsepower), Peter Wolf, Chris Hillman (The Flying Burrito Bros) or maybe an inspired amalgam of all of them. Binder here, demands your attention.

[Recorded, mixed and mastered entirely on analog tape]

An easy kinda path
Hallelujah
Lord knows I could be that man
Who you walk to
Crazy kinda makes me sad
When you ain’t with me
Released that bird in hand
Still sings true
Oh as hard as it gets
We’re gonna make the best of this
Baby come on
Baby come on
Baby come on
Make it easy
Take it easy
Make it easy

Todd Binder is a pioneer of alt-indie music — music with a timeless quality that won’t be cornered by any one type of genre. Creating art-pieces which seamlessly weave together elements of multiple genres of music, he began performing on the local bar scenes for the Charlottesville, VA and surrounding cities, where he quickly gained a reputation for his high-energy shows and songwriting talent. His work garnered the attention of industry notables such as Paul Evans, co-author of The Rolling Stone Album Guide, who offered "Great songs. Insinuating vocals. Extremely promising!" as well as late Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Leroi Moore, who invited Todd to record at the band's private Haunted Hollow recording studio in Virginia.

Now based in Marin County, California, Todd Binder began officially releasing singles in 2023. His first 3 releases were selected as semi-finalist winners in 5 categories of the 2023 International Songwriting Competition: best Adult Album Alternative, best Unsigned, Sunray; best Americana, Real Love; best Folk/Singer-songwriter, best Unpublished, Alameda.
