"All bets are off / There's no mistake you can make / That would ever change / What I know to be true..."
The sunny happy / sad lollipop swirls of "All Bets Are Off" by Brooklyn's Awksymoron skips and hops with healing bruises and hope for good times to come (for a change). At least this is what I am feeling, dashes of melancholia but tossing caution to the wind too within the wonderfully slippery stair stepping electric guitar patterns, the punchy bass and drums (so tightly wound), the tiptoeing keys and, of course, Athena Matsil's upfront evocative vocal countenance. The intimacy of the dynamic sonic spread is key to the charm but everything here is charming and emotionally drawn while feeling so exquisitely spirited and jammy.
I love Matsil's vocal melodies and the way they dance with the many musical frameworks here and I love the emotionally vast lyrics that make you wonder of all the invisible ones that hide in between.
"I think of all the times
I try to say what I meanYou make it clear to me, it's not just a dream
And you see me
All bets are off
And I'm so thrilled to be here
We try our best and we
Know that what's for us will not pass us by
We try our best and we
Know that what's for us will not pass us by"
Apart from Matsil on vox and guitar, there is Griffin Jennings on bass and synth, DJ O'Loane on guitar and Phil Joy on drums.

"All Bets Are Off" as an introduction song for me is so killer, so forever dreamy and moving. I will be delving further.
LINER NOTES:
[Growing up as the product of a native Greek Brooklynite and an Ecuadorian immigrant, Athena Matsil was exposed to a variety of clashing sounds and styles as early as she can remember. Influenced by old school rock, disco, jazz, and most recently pop, Matsil's witty humor and love of puns led her to craft her own brand of indie-tinged bedroom pop under the moniker Awksymoron. Most recently, the four piece's magnetic style and unique sound saw them opening for Sidney Gish, a pioneer of bedroom pop and huge inspiration of Matsil's.]
