Hamburger and the mercurial melancholy, endearingly bruised, breathless stitches of "Frankenstein"

"how to do anything / as the day shifts from bleak / back to black / slowly stole on unique kinda sad..."

The mercurial melancholy, endearingly bruised, breathless stitches of "Frankenstein" by Bristol six piece Hamburger, and from their sophomore EP, "Beat Back The Ghouls", feels like a slow swaying hug that you give someone you love who is moving way too far away. The individual elements, from the vibrating guitar strums, a plaintive vintage synth drone, emotional drum shuffles, lovely bass heaviness and Fearghall Kilkenny's unique vocal countenance that feels forever young, pushes so many buttons and when "Frankenstein" erupts into pushed distortions, flutey double-esque leads (or thereabouts), the feeling like twee post grunge alt rock is gloriously dreamy.

OR

as Hamburger shares:

"Frankenstein thrums with the longing melancholy of summers’ past. It shifts between emotive lilting melodies, driven guitar hooks, singalong choruses and warm dreamy fuzz leaving a tender impression of lost time, lost innocence and lost love."

Wow, love the melodies on this one and the pervasive layering. In the end, "Frankenstein" feels like a youthful crush that left real scars that will not go away.

Bristol six-piece ‘Hamburger’ are thrilled to announce the release of the second EP, ‘Beat Back The Ghouls’. The record, a follow-up to their 2020 critically acclaimed debut, ‘Teenage Terrified’, will be out 29th November 2024, and sees the band develop their sound and plough new furrows both sonically and thematically.

‘Beat Back The Ghouls’ sees the band take their sound in a more lush, subtle and layered direction, developing skillfully on the raw songwriting ability offered in their debut. On this record Hamburger create a more complex and sophisticated sound, flitting masterfully between driven guitar hooks, emotive lilting melodies, singalong angst-fuelled hits, and warm dreamy fuzz.
