Widows Gold and the cascading sadness and love fuel of "Another You"

"thought it would take one try / i'd hear your heart beat / and you would be mine / blinded by hope / i picked out your name..."

The cascading sadness and love fuel of "Another You" by Widows Gold, the Costa Mesa, California band centered around the songwriting husband / wife duo of Ben Sauer (guitar) and Madeline Star (vox), is so purely emotional that it feels like the band has elevated themselves but then I say that every time I have featured them on AP. This, I believe is the 6th time (or thereabouts). I am always quietly stunned by Madeline Star's vocal persona and the level of emotionality she brings (always) and also am smitten with Sauer's writing and the entire band's artful choices and the fact that they play off of each other like a band should.

The tightly wound writing on "Another You", music by Sauer and lyrics by Star, is gorgeous and impactful and upon first listen (weeks ago I'm afraid) it embraced me in the way that this kind of song should but I left it for awhile, as a potent love song or broken heart song. My schedule has been weirdly harried and as I finally came back to this song and delved further I read these very personal liner notes:

"Another You' is an emotional journey through pregnancy loss and finding joy amidst the pain. Rather, it transcends into processing grief as a whole. Sonically, the song shares the weight of its words with vocals drenched in reverb, melancholic acoustic riffs, jangly electrics, droning organ, and a haunting tambourine."

Now, the song has hit me like the proverbial emotional ton of bricks. The intimate lyrical reveals, the sheer emotional weight, the musical break that swirls and hammers the song home, and of course Madeline's pure emotional catharsis and I am literally in tears.

WIDOWS GOLD provides all the nostalgia you crave from your favorite decades of music while still pushing contemporary boundaries. The female-fronted quartet blends 80s post-punk with 90s alternative rock into a refreshingly original sound that seamlessly translates from the studio to the stage.

Madeline Star’s striking vocals and passionate lyrics are supported by percussive guitar work, chorus-tinged bass lines and infectious drum grooves. The group pulls inspiration from the CBGB-era and early 00s rock revival out of New York and is bringing that energy into the Los Angeles underground. WG is meant to be listened to late, live and loud.
