"If I said / Anywhere is home, if you are with me / Would you believe me? / I think we should travel round the world / As long as you're near me, I'll feel easy..."
The personal emotional travelogue (steeped visions bolstered by longing and hope) of "This Utopia", by British singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer Zoe Konez, is a much needed injection of pep of gentle vigor, of viewing the world like a community except what it is, or what it seems to be. The thing is maybe Zoe's rose colored view is not as distant as it seems even though over the last few years we all have watched the world in decay on our phones. Zoe's vocal countenance, sisterly and sagely floats on top of her cleanly drawn acoustic folk shapes embraced by drones of sound that feel like dreamy ambience as much as it does instrumentations. I adore the vocal melodies, the sense of movement, the pushing bass shapes, the way the up strums feel like an emotional vast engine, and, of course, Zoe's evocative, beautiful lyrics.
Here are some:
"If I said
Anywhere is home, if you are with meWould you believe me?
I think we should travel round the world
As long as you're near me, I'll feel easy
You know the world is one big family
Extended, descended Kith and kin
Treat everyone like long lost relatives
And we'll get on just fine
Let's go out into the world today
I want to meet everybody
Let's go out into the world today
I want to take you there, where we can share in this utopia"
LINER NOTES:
['This Utopia' is the fourth in a series of singles being released in the run up to an album. Self-produced and self-released, Zoe is a true independent musician. Recently relocating from London to Brighton on England’s south coast, the collection of songs were written and recorded in a transitional period where she craved a life in a less crowded, less pressurised place and so plotted her move out of the city.]
”Of the current group of songs I’m releasing, This Utopia is a pause from anxiety and stress, of inner turmoil and processing of feelings. It’s a moment of mellow optimism, letting a sunny afternoon daydream drift into a happy place built in my imagination, where life feels easy and everyone is a friend. Having the capability to slip into a soothing happy place even for a few minutes can be restoring and help you through the challenging times. I wrote this song from a place of peace I managed to find for a short time, within a hectic yet isolated-feeling world.”
"This Utopia" as a piece of dreamy optimism feels as purely enchanting / beautiful as it feels melancholic and heartbreaking because as much as it holds up a meditative life affirming longing mirror for what can be, it might, afterall, be a two way mirror with devolving realities but I love it still, I really do.
