"I keep feeling time rolling backward / though I know it's not..."
The memory chasing indie experimentations of "Thinking of Black" by Humdrum Book Club, the project of Venice, California based songwriter Andrew Ross and producer John Helfrich, feels like a collision of 70's pop, 2000's art indie, 90's post punk, just to name a few. Wonderfully, rendered / produced, the song runs up hills and chases it's tail while you get the feeling that cassette players are playing found footage sonics in someone's attic. All the while as you are mesmerized by Ross's evocative vocal countenance and endearing vocal melodies (the pop prowess stuns you in lovely ways) you are being transported by the sonics within the very tightly wound musicality. The choices here (maybe cast by producer Helfrich) feels very pop noir and kind of retro 80's and the lead guitar break is so juicy great as well. I am feeling this (maybe odd) cross-generational amalgam of artists like Todd Rundgren, MGMT, XTC and Haircut One Hundred (or thereabouts). Bands that were soaked in pure pop emotions but loved subverting the aesthetic at the same time, and bands / artists who displayed heavy indie rock chops while embracing a real sense of whimsy.
