Philippe Brown and the slow core acidic jazz fused indie rock absurdity of "Life Enhancers"

"Please don’t touch / The cingulate cortex / It’s in a critical state / Overflowing / With super glue / Consuming life enhancers / Basking in industrial soup..."

The slow core acidic jazz fused indie rock absurdity of "Life Enhancers", by French and British multi-instrumentalist Philippe Brown, feels like a crush of dream pop and holiday, a dash of surreality in real life.

LINER NOTES to illuminate (bracketed):

[Philippe Brown is a survivor of the Parisian alternative scene in which he is involved as half of italo-synthpop duo La Punta Bianca and his absurdist dance music project Raymond D. Barre. His compositions range from psychedelic synthwave to experimental ballads, with lyrics written in his two mother tongues. Over the last ten years he has toured regularly in Europe with his various dance and synthpop projects, and has hosted radio shows at Radio Campus Paris and LYL Radio.]

Listening (while reading the curious, trippy lyrics), I thought of Animal Collective or Flaming Lips slowed down (lol) or a more Lo-fi chill and abstract Caribou or Broken Bells. Anyway, "Life Enhancers" lyrically, narratively feels like an ID stream of consciousness to me and I love that, Brown says this about this wonky affair:

"I wrote this dreamy synth pop song while watching people wait for burgers at the airport, like strange animals in a weird little zoo. The lyrics just came to me, kind of melancholic and detached, floating over psychedelic harmonies. It’s got this odd, drifting, melodic vibe." - philippe brown

Cool. By the way, this track would be perfect for a series like 'Severance'.

LYRICS

Please don’t touch
The cingulate cortex
It’s in a critical state
Overflowing
With super glue

Consuming life enhancers
Basking in industrial soup

This blue drink tastes
Like some many windows
The distorted prism
Of misfortune
Is turning red

White millenials turning knobs
In nursing homes

A little crowd
Of foxes waiting
Numbered tickets in each paw
Watching the sandwich factory
Until their name is called

Consuming life enhancers
Basking in industrial soup
