Oh, Rose and the glowing ascensions / unlocked orchestrated folk heart of "For Art"

"At first it feels so foreign / To be / In love I guess It’s true / I was thinking about you / I was thinking about you..."

The glowing ascensions / unlocked orchestrated folk heart of "For Art" by Olympia, WA / Portland based Oh, Rose and the title track of their new EP, runs with open arms through what feels like a spinning amalgam of indie folk rock, baroque pop and Western pop noir spaces. The angelic opening that feels like a bright light for front-woman Olivia Rose's vocal countenance, open, vulnerable and emotionally giving, gives way to twangy guitar slides, lovely bass pushes and mellow but anchoring drums all washed in what feels like string swell or mellotron-esque ones. The sensory feeling is at once kind of surreal while feeling as real and raw like Rose's vocals that are as natural as if she was telling you how she feels in your living room. Oh, Rose leaves the reverb wash to the backing vox and I like this aesthetic.

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):

[The title track from For Art, the new EP from long-running Olympia/Portland group Oh, Rose. The six-song album serves as a perfect distillation of what makes the band so special. A year out from the release of their 2024 masterwork, Dorothy, finds the group's members getting married, starting families, and contemplating the family-like bond that's held the band together for over a decade.

Exploring themes of long-term commitment and partnership—both in romantic and platonic relationships, as well as to artistic practice itself—the six tracks on For Art navigate the complexities of closeness. Wading through feelings of disillusionment, the album is ultimately a hopeful work, one of recommitment and perseverance.]

"Oh, Rose", in the end, is the kind of song that wraps around you like a hidden indie flick you feel like only you found and floods you with emotions even creating goosebumps that skate around your skin on a cold morning.

"At first it feels so foreign'
To be
In love I guess It’s true
I was thinking about you
I was thinking about you
Could have invested all my time I was thinking about you

First I feel
So nervous
To be
This vulnerable It’s true
That I was thinking about you
I was thinking about you
Could have invested all my pride I was thinking about you
I was thinking about you
Could have invested all my time I was thinking about you
First

In 2024, the band celebrates 10 years with their reissue of their first EP, That Do Now See, alongside their new album “Dorothy,” which is set to release September 5th via Antiquated Future.
