The hyper kinetic alt rock jam and post grunge ghosts of "Paper Thin", by the Memphis TN alt rock quartet Speaker Girl, instantly wake you up and pumps adrenaline through your veins. It is the proverbial banger, the opening angular, a combination of heavy alt rock, math rock, proggy indie but the song artfully transforms with lighter shades of vocals dressed up with touches of 90's emo. I would say that the entire song, in fact, is sort of filtered through 90's post grunge and for whatever reason I flashed on early 2000's Eriatarka by The Mars Volta (my mind sometimes works in mysterious ways) even though the song is vastly different and more experimental. Still I feel psychic connections in the progressive nature meets alternately counterpointed emotionally drawn vocals. Maybe, this sense of muscular music and more vulnerable melodies in the systemically quiet loud / internal rumination versus external smashing walls that appeals to me. Overthinking as usual but anyway you slice it, "Paper Thin" is super engaging and pumps you up.
