groan room and the rolling somber ruminations and manic eruptions of "if you think it's cool"

"Made a deal, with a god you don't know  //  Woke up early yet felt terribly dull  //  Makes it hard in the sun in Rome  //  But even harder in the grey back home..."

The rolling somber ruminations and manic eruptions of "if you think it's cool", by the Salford (UK) based lowercased alt rock band groan room, is exquisitely moving from front to back and inside out. There are surprises to be had which is thrilling for a music writer who listens to so much new music each and every day. Some of my favorite aspects of this track is it's rolling nature fueled by synth keys that feel as melancholy as the lead vocal countenance, absolutely moving and endearing and the words tumbling from this thoughtful lips are poetic and provoke deep thoughts too.

"Daily interventions,
Name me something never mentioned,
Enjoy the open door,
Why you sleeping on the classroom floor?

Made a deal, with a god you don't know
Woke up early yet felt terribly dull
Makes it hard in the sun in Rome
But even harder in the grey back home

Powerful, omniscient it looms above my bed
Pours the shame into my ears and the worst thing's that it makes sense
Now I'll cry for mother wrapped in fear
Leave the rational thoughts on read,
Maybe I won't get to see the end."

Those passages are just a few but every single lyric has an important place in this rambling stream of feelings. During the song that, again, rolls in somber ways, there are brilliant heavy downbeats that punctuate the sadness and unknown life's narratives but what really floors me in the upcoming emotional storm. As fanning electric guitar layers invade like a dark storm, as synth counter poised streams flourish and a mournful, yet beautiful, horn plays in the background there is a dinge of blistering spoken word. The surprising twist slaps you upside the head in a great way.

Fucking amazing track. "if you think it's cool" was written by Ben Owen, Carl O'Neil, Matthew Walker, Ramin.

LYRICS

Daily interventions,
Name me something never mentioned,
Enjoy the open door,
Why you sleeping on the classroom floor?

Made a deal, with a god you don't know
Woke up early yet felt terribly dull
Makes it hard in the sun in Rome
But even harder in the grey back home

Powerful, omniscient it looms above my bed
Pours the shame into my ears and the worst thing's that it makes sense
Now I'll cry for mother wrapped in fear
Leave the rational thoughts on read,
Maybe I won't get to see the end.

When you happened to be taking a break
The birthday cake blew up in your face.
Like a detective without a case,
Without perspective, without a place
Well I expect you'll bore the world and its sun
At your wake and then well beyond
With your leopard-print satin bong
If you think it's cool well you're probably wrong.

Powerful, omniscient it looms above my bed
Pours the shame into my ears and the worst thing's that it makes sense
Now I'll cry for mother wrapped in fear
Leave the rational thoughts on read,
Maybe I won't get to see the end.

Spoken:
The law isn't a cure for stupidity. Tristan winging in with his ponytail. A jolly-good rogering and a packet of mini-cheddars, it's all in the wrist (x3).
Make sure to lock the back-door before heading to the final frontier. Opt-out of marketing emails but opt-in to the quasi-offensive right wing rhetoric that confirms your bigoted narrative.
I'll go out the same way I arrived, CRYING.
Pick up your suitcase in the small hours don't wheel it along like a d.. Do whatever you can to please your fellow passenger, on this voyage towards the inevitable.
Take your shoes off when you waltz under my skin, bring my a BITCHIN BREW.
When I'm lonely, I'll be lonely for two!

groan room’s ear-splitting, raucous and hook-heavy sound is inspired by the transatlantic 90s - grunge and brit-pop with a healthy splash of slacker-rock thrown in for good measure. The Salford-based four-piece of seasoned musicians cut their teeth on the North West’s band scene before getting into the practice room together. the songs are full of self-deprecation and a tongue-in-cheek apathy towards life and some of the terrible curveballs it throws us. That unsettling angst thrown up by your mid-late twenties is the driving force behind the lyrics, and is further audible in the screeching and groaning of distorted guitars and the furious energy pumped out by the band’s accomplished rhythm section. In March 2020, through an overwhelming act of kindness, groan room went to the iconic Abbey Road Studios to record their debut, cacophonous, three-track EP.
