Chris Canipe and the spirited slacker rock awe and wonder of "Barely Stitched"

"Well, they’re tearing down the banners / Pushing trash into the aisles / If you’re waiting on a winner /
It’s gonna be awhile..."

The spirited slacker rock awe and wonder of "Barely Stitched", by Kansas City singer-songwriter / musician Chris Canipe (and artful cohorts), is saturated in folk rock hearted comfort and indie rock cool. There is something timeless here and, in fact, as I listened the first time a wry smile grew on my face maybe because of the song's cross generational breathe and scope. The kind of skipping swinging cadence, jangly guitars, beautiful bass walks, dreamy organ, lovely evocative vocals and lyrical nods to 'Proud Mary' by CCR had my mind going to 60's Laurel Canyon folk rock sounds and 90's indie slacker, particularly 'Range Life' by Pavement all at once.

"Barely Stitched" exists on Chris Canipe's new album "Monuments" and he shares this about the track:

["Barely Stitched" a song about America as it is. Superduty trucks and Punisher stickers. Spam phone calls and wildfires. Billionaires buying social media companies. Different definitions of wrong and right. It's a jam.]

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):

[Monuments is about state of things. Empires in decline and the stubborn knowing that it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s about sticking it out, growing older, staying in love, making things, and finding comfort in everyday routines. It’s tough out there. Take care of yourself. Put it on a t-shirt.[I write and record music at home in Kansas City and play in a Columbia, Missouri–based rock band called Malone. We put out a record in 2025 called A Spark Out in the Dark. This is my third solo effort following Easy Company (2023) and Trick of the Light (2024).]

[I do most of my recording work at home here in Kansas City and the rest at Centro Cellar Studios in Columbia, Missouri. I’ve mixed and mastered my last three albums with longtime friend Wil Reeves. Each record has involved more collaboration, including bandmates from Malone and other friends on horns, strings, drums, and piano. This is the most collaborative of the three.]

I perused the songs on "Monuments" and it sounds memorable and varied already and while that deep listen is for another time, I look forward to it and hope you dive deep right away.

Chris Canipe is a singer and songwriter from Kansas City. Sometimes he plays with Malone, an excellent three-songwriter outfit from Columbia, Missouri.

He shares:

I’ve released music off and on since my college days in Columbia, Missouri. In 2005, I co-founded the label Emergency Umbrella, which saw modest success with Foundry Field Recordings, The Doxies, Bald Eagle, and my own band, The Paradise Vending. Malone formed in 2006, and we've released six EPs over the years.

In my other life, I've work as a journalist at The Wall Street Journal, Axios and Reuters. These days I work for an international non-profit. I live in Kansas City with my wife and son. I write songs because I can't help myself.
