The youthful indie meteor shower and artful mayhem of "Smoking Gun" by Virginia bred / New York based singer-songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Ben Demase and cohorts, feels raw, feels explosive and messy in the best possible way. The sense is a tightly squeezed live recording in a cinderblock venue with all instrument sounds car crashing into each other and the drummer's cymbal ring felt in the back of your molars. From what I can gather Demase plays all instrumentation except for the drums courtesy of Maeve Stuelke and the result is the kind of intense mosh inducing energy adjacent to early Surf Curse (I remember those days at The Smell) or The Red Pears or Eyedress or Vundabar or maybe 'those guys' in 1997 before they became The Strokes.
