Highbush Caribou and the hazy comfort, psychedelic calm, and eclipsing sadness of "Matter"

"If I live in a computer / Then why do I feel so much? / With every flower that I feel  / Infinity with every touch / Wish that I could keep it shut / Code me so I won’t erupt / Interrupt, interrupt / Circuitry has gone corrupt ..."

The hazy comfort, psychedelic calm, and eclipsing sadness of "Matter", by Prince Rupert, British Columbia's Highbrush Caribou, is beautiful in it's cross generational, blendo genre'd effect. Like a sonic emotional lie detector if you let a prospective friend (or more than a friend) hear it and they feel nothing, then maybe stay clear or approach with caution... naww, just stay clear. I am thoroughly appreciating / trust falling for Cameron Cerant's burly bass lines, Alvin Seymour woozy Western lead guitar sounds, the solid skip of the drum beat courtesy of Shadoe Dansereau, the darkly dreamy guitar rhythms and the well wishing melancholic vocal countenance of Jackie Goetz. Love this, it has, quite frankly inhabited a permanent place in my head signalling me to visit Big Sur and bring the requisite flannels.

Yes.  AND love the lyrics too.

LIVE

If I live in a computer
Then why can I feel so much?
With every flower that I feel
Infinity with every touch
Wish that I could keep it shut
Code me so I won’t erupt
Interrupt, interrupt
Circuitry has gone corrupt
Hey, It don’t matter anyway & if it’s all in my mind
As we swim along the line
Just the moment in my sight
Or if I stay right there in time
Milky shake in my room
Time expands, then I flew
Just one night
Just one night
Eternity in it’s own right
Hey, It don’t matter anyway

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):

[There’s a restlessness running through their music that sets them apart. Subtle, almost spy-like tension weaves through the arrangements, giving the songs a constant sense of motion—like they’re always unfolding just slightly out of frame. It’s a feeling that keeps listeners leaning in, following the shifts as they happen rather than settling into anything too comfortable.

Their upcoming single, “Matter,” serves as a clear first statement of intent. The track moves with a natural, organic rhythm, shaped by shifting textures that rise and recede in waves. At its core is sharp, understated songwriting, but it’s wrapped in atmosphere—wide-open, weathered, and a little worn at the edges.

That balance is what defines Highbush Caribou at first listen: coastal grit paired with backroad warmth, structure meeting looseness, clarity meeting haze. For listeners drawn to folk that edges into something more shadowed, surf-washed, and off the beaten path, “Matter” makes a strong and memorable introduction.]
