The abstract emo folk / vibrant indie rock escapades of "Little Thief" by San Francisco lower-case singer-songwriter sam hirst, and from his latest 2026 album "Defenseless, good", move you with lovely fluid twists with varying degrees of punch that disarms you in surprising ways. I am loving the power pop, prog indie sharpness and sonic attacks that roll along with jangly guitar chords, free wheeling drums and bass dance (love the bass playing) and more. In just a few breaths of the song, it materializes as indie something that feels more like indie folk / emo folk and a few inhalations turns into a jammy indie rock affair all the time pushed along by sam's abstract / absurdist emo lyrics and melodies. As I listened and smiled, I though of artists like Elliot Smith, Of Montreal and Pavement too, I think because there is a tendency here to cast melancholy morsels of self reflective angst and agitations via a blend of abstract analogous or metaphorically smart wordplay. I am also loving the production that sounds like people jamming all in one room and whether it is or not doesn't really matter, that vibe is inherent either way.
