The chewy forlorn alt country / indie folk cascade of "Garage" by Your Jack, the broken mirror moniker of Seattle-based folk country and bedroom pop songwriter Jack Kennelly (released via Garden Gate), and from his 6th full length (2nd full band released) album "This One", feels so wonderfully raw and saturated with splinters of 90's cow punk (think Cracker) and 2000's porch indie country (think Drive-By Truckers). All that and also Kennelly offers up a unique unparalleled grist mill vocal countenance that (maybe) feels adjacent to the storytelling vibe of an Ian Felice or M.C. Taylor or Tom Waits. I say maybe because Kennelly's singer-songwriter craft storytelling feels like a twisty blend of his own folklore and absurdist self deprecation set on fire, cooked up, burnt, chewed on and coughed up. I especially love the lo-fi drawly side that feels kind of post grunge and the fact that Your Jack with talented friends and musician on "This One" tracked all the songs absolutely live in one particular day in one particular basement studio with no overdubs or edits. That is fucking amazing.
