Sail Cassady's darkly moving "Got The Pace" simply kills in surprising ways

AP Track Review

Sail Cassady is the solo project of Colin Craveiro (Victoria, BC's Man Made Lake) and the beautifully sad Got The Pace from the "Silverfish" EP is darkly moving. You have Craveiro's captivating vocal performance. His sound from hushed trembles to cold reticence to sad realizations is commanding at every turn and then you have the surprising turns melodically. Even further you have lyrics that are poetic and so broken. The cadence and sonic movements of the song, electric guitar chords and dark keys hanging in the air, you get a sense that each turn is made with crushing pain. Like a shattered porcelain plate that is glued together that you have to use with care, the song goes from sad dull blows to stirring waves of sound in a slow and measured way. At the same time there are piano lines (and vocal melodies) that sometimes gallop happily along within this melancholy alt folk song. Craveiro's melodies, his tender lilt, at times even made me think of the less jaded Morrissey (of days gone by).

In the end, Got The Pace is a stunner. I have listened to it often and it always creates dark, sad imagery and evocative thoughts. In some ways, with Craveiro's emotional stoicism (?) and muscular tones it feels like a killer, an assassin confronting all the human wreckage in his life and the loss of one's soul. I may be over reaching here (in a big way) but great songs tend to make me do that.
