The Great Yawn sound is many things - hear the wanderlusty "A Man In Need"

AP Track Review

There is something about the "Haaah" wail at the beginning of The Great Yawn's alt country / indie rock jaunt A Man In Need that conjures up a vast journey, maybe across surf silhouetted beaches or barren seas of sand. Of course, it is not just the yelp, in and of itself, but the wanderlust of the guitar strums and the sway of the bass line and singer-songwriter Dan Bakkes' beautiful vocal performance that is many things. The character of her voice has a beautiful lilt but a deep sustain that holds the D.N. A of classic folk but indie rock and chamber pop sounds too. Her self harmonies blend that sound even more. The Great Yawn is an alt-country band from Pretoria, South Africa that she fronts and the self-described alt-country vibe is owned but their sound reaches out to indie pop and more. On A Man In Need I thought of other artists like the surfy indie sound of the Allah Las and the alt folkish Angel Olsen and even the pop noir of earlier Lana Del Rey. But descriptors are, in the end, less important than the songs themselves and Dan Bakkes and The Great Yawn serve up many tasty pies on there musical window sill.

A Man In Need is the second single (the first being the wet and wonderful- indie pop California) released after the full length "Botanica" (2019).
