...obviously crafts askew bedroom pop and "Phones" skates along on little nuances that sound so big
AP Track Review
UK lo-fi artist ...obviously crafts bedroom pop and her latest Phones is a chill track that skates along on sort of light jazz affectations with a Casio-fied beat but the nuances are many and pretty great. The beat morphs into a clicking clock really and her lush vocal harmonies fill the spaces so beautifully. The chorus blows up with a bass line of sorts that feels nice (whether it is a synth or regular guitar) and there are askew drones of partial dissonance. Oh, and yes- mock conversations that are charming. In the end, the lo-fi nature does not define Phones and it, in fact, doesn't feel all that lo-fi. It is bedroom pop slowly poured over a bit of tropicalia really and it tastes good.
It is about escaping in your mind to a place you'd rather be. My favourite part about 'phones' is how it switches back and forth between the singing and the 'demonic' dialogue! :-)
