Paul Dill and the Black Bears create experimental vibes on "Duck for 20 More Years"

AP Track Review

It is not often that you hear a blend of a 72 Strat guitar, baritone sax, drums and vox doing fresh experimental indie stuff. I say stuff because, the style is not always easy to discern or describe which makes it even better. Paul Dill and The Black Bears is exactly just that. A divergent hybrid trio based out of Berlin. I think sometimes the place dictates (in a way) or at least informs the artist and Berlin and this musical vibe, yeah I get it, both entities may of informed each other really. I mean, I may be wrong but I don't think that this sound could of been born in Flagstaff, Arizona (for example). At the center is singer-songwriter, theater composer Paul Dill and the track Duck for 20 More Years is on the trio's Self Titled debut EP which dropped last December (2019) and is propelled by a bouncing beat, a mixture of jazz meets alt folk meets swinging sax meets experimental topped off with Paul Dill's (what feels like DaDa-istic) fever dream vocals. I would love to see this live and snap my fingers in time.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:

Paul Dill and The Black Bears
When the darkness gives way and morphine, god of sleep, gradually loses his power over the earthly beings, the bears will rise from their cave to the light.
Paul Dill, a Berlin-based songwriter and theater composer, finds the support and inspiration for his impulsive tunes in the tremendous power of these magical animals.
With the trio "Paul Dill and The Black Bears" he discovers new ways through the wilderness of indie rock.
Heavy grooves and the deep colors of the saxophone bring back the memory of his childhood between bears.
While being only committed to his origin and 1972 Stratocaster, he writes the wildest stories and gently shouts them into the night.
