Local Man Dies' tightly artfully wound "Cilice"

"the howling lunatic...the werewolf"

Local Man Dies are an alternative rock band that hails from Dallas Texas. The unusual titled track Cilice is a proggy heavy rocker with cleanly drawn vocals by Spencer Hamilton (guitar and vox) and a densely packed sounds by the other players, John Wasson, (drums, vox, keyboards), Jonny Muhl (guitar, vox) and Jamie Stafford (bass). Starting with an almost folk rock / art rock sense of grandeur it falls into a formidable alternative heaviness (with a grunge underbelly) moving dynamically between the different motifs. There is an elegant post rock tone here, progressive and tightly, yet beautifully wound. What is the song about?

"What is a cilice? It's an uncomfortable shirt made of hair used for penitential purposes in the old days of religion. Using this idea, we took a trip back to those more primitive days to combine the grisly premise with that of the hairy ol' moonlight beast: the lycanthrope, the howling lunatic...the werewolf. What begins as a shedding of human inhibitions ends as a cursed lament."
