"and now is the time"
Belako is a post punk band from Spain and on their new single, The Craft, they move from a sort of carefree post punk feel to crazy eruptions of more caustic punk tones only to have the song stall and pitch down in a slow motion creepy outro.
“The Craft pays homage to our teenage love of the 90’s movie by the same name” explain the band. “It also feels like the here and now, and it’s now or never. A sorority spell to face adversity head on, and to take fragility as a vital force in new ways to build ourselves up”.
The Official Video finds the quartet walking into a forest full of witches or so it seems.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:
One of Spain’s fastest-rising bands Belako are sharing their new single ‘The Craft’. The post-punk track is lifted from the band’s first internationally released album ‘Plastic Drama’, due for release on 8th May via BMG. The band will release a brand-new single every Friday for 4 weeks, with ‘The Craft’ coming as their first release in the series.
“The Craft pays homage to our teenage love of the 90’s movie by the same name” explain the band. “It also feels like the here and now, and it’s now or never. A sorority spell to face adversity head on, and to take fragility as a vital force in new ways to build ourselves up”. The track is accompanied by a video which can be watched here.
Named best new band by Rolling Stone Magazine in Spain, Belako comprises two powerhouse women in vocalist/keyboard player Cristina Lizarraga and bassist Lore Nekane Billelabeitia, alongside Lore’s brother Josu Ximun Billelabeitia, who plays guitar and drummer Lander Zalakain. Hailing from the small town of Mungia near Bilbao, Belako have been playing non-stop in Spain these past few years, building a dedicated fanbase in their native county which has quickly been spilling out into other parts of Europe and beyond.
Having supported the likes of DMA’s on their 2019 UK Tour, QOTSA and Liam Gallagher at Finsbury Park, and played major international festivals such as Primavera, SXSW , Low, Rock En Seine, Benicassim and Reading & Leeds, Belako’s explosive live performances have excited crowds from small dive bars in their early days to huge international festivals more recently, and their anything-can-happen stage attitude showcases the power, electricity and punk ethos of this exciting young band.
‘Plastic Drama’ is the bands fourth record, but the first since signing a major international record deal, and certainly their most ambitious to date. Self-produced by the band, ‘Plastic Drama' searches for “the real meaning of things in a world that translates everything into assembly lines, manufacturing and the exploitation of living beings,” say the band. “It’s about the harsh reality our generation is facing and the only good use of new technology, which is the ability to spread the word and call for action. The title of the album has another message, as it also reminds us the first world issues we’ve come so keen to complain about. We can only hope for a more responsible human legacy”.
Belako were primed for their break-out shows in The US this month including slots at SXSW, followed by an extensive headline tour in Spain and their first visit to The Great Escape Festival. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all those shows have been understandably cancelled. Belako’s performance at this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival on the main stage are still planning to go ahead. Further information & updates on live activity will be announced in due course.
