"Oh god, is this still my story?"
Hayden Arp's pretty and pretty moving House On A Hill is one of those songs that feel good waking up to. Like stirring from a dream or nightmare only to awake and see the one you love lying next to you and despite their face, being smooshed messily in the pillow, looks beautiful. It is a morning song, a soundtrack to thinking about your life, the sad reflections and happy ones while drinking your coffee. Or maybe, that is just me. Arp is a talented singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and teacher (of music). Of House On A Hill he shares the following:
Though I recorded House on a Hill (and its sibling, All My Friends) in early March, when the world was still open for business, it wasn't until a month of quarantine had gone by that I realized both songs were about being alone.
House on a Hill is a song about the anxiety of solitude, the way relationships can fall away over time, and the decisions we make to bring them back. I have ended almost every concert of the last two years with it. This is the first time it's been released.

It was engineered by Lynne Earls (k.d. lang, Melody Gardot), mixed by Ryan Lipman (Jamestown Revival, Ari Herstand), and mastered by Hans Dekline (U2, Jesca Hoop).
The song recorded LIVE is wonderfully written with the vocal melody embedded within the guitar picking. They hold each other up like caring friends. Arp's voice is comforting and I imagine he is one of those singers whose speaking voice is as perfect as his singing one. The rootsy nature makes this song timeless and the potent image of a house as a point, a touchstone of ones life is terribly poignant especially to myself, who does not have that heart (made out of wood and stucco or brick and mortar) right now that contains my memories or future dreams.
Hayden Arp lives in Richmond, Virginia.
