"Dropping the guard on my mind's obsession"
Talking Out Loud by Vancouver' Jody Glenham plays like a dark mystery. I would like to see this movie, especially the one in Glenham's mind. Metaphors or not, the lyrics conjure up secrets told.
Murder in the summertime.
The sun don't set when the world's on fire.
Murder in the summertime.
You hold my hand and admit the crime
The song dives quickly into the words set against a vast sound that carry dreamy musical melodies in a kind of folk campfire meets blue collar Americana sound. The song thrives on sustains whether the lead guitar wail in the background or the kind of rock orchestration but mostly Glenham's engaging voice. She has this amazing tremble, vibrato she carries in her vocal aesthetic, in her deep lilt. I actually thought about Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) quite a bit while I got lost in Talking Out Loud. I look forward to diving into more of Glenham's music.

Called ‘One of the local music scene’s MVP’ by the Vancouver Sun, Jody Glenham fuses hazy vintage tones with modern songwriting that wistfully drifts the listener into a vivid altered reality. Initially drawing comparisons to 90s band Mazzy Star and the more contemporary Sharon Van Etten, Jody and her band, The Dreamers, have crafted a powerful live show that leaves audiences spellbound. Her dark alto texture gives her work a celestial, surreal quality, making her the perfect fit to headline two sold out shows at the HR Macmillan Space Centre earlier this year. With her last EP hitting #1 on CiTR’s 101.9 FM’s charts, several of her tracks have been featured on multiple TV series and a shoe was named after her by John Fluevog himself. Glenham, born on Friday the 13th of all days, is currently in the studio working on her next album with producers Raymond Richards (Local Natives, LCD Soundsystem) and Louise Burns (Gold & Youth, Lillix).
