San Mei's artistic vision is dreamy and full of fury on "Cry" (Official Video)

"you only have one heart to break"

San Mei is the music project / moniker of Aussie Gold Coast alternative pop artist Emily Hamilton and her dreamy (x2) song Cry is truly moving in multiple ways. Contained within the runaway beat, ethereal synth affectations, and nimbly evocative guitar lines is Hamilton's passionate vocals. There is also a sort of Americana rock vibe full of fury beneath the dreaminess that itself is born out of iconie 60's rebel youth songs. It is all there for us to enjoy, for us to get lost in. San Mei / Emily Hamilton as singer-songwriter / producer has created a cinematic piece of sonic art.

“I wrote Cry when I realized it had gotten to the middle of the year already, and time was flying like crazy. It made me think, I hadn't really been paying attention to what was happening around me in the present, and only been thinking about the future, wishing time would hurry up so I could get to that next thing. I think when we're young, we lament all the things we don't have, or how we're not where we want to be yet. We could actually end up wishing our time and youth away. This song is a reminder to myself to stop, breathe and appreciate this stage of my life and everything it has to offer.” - Emily Hamilton

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:

Australian Alt-Pop Artist San Mei to Release Cry EP this Friday, March 20, via Sydney’s etcetc Records

San Mei, aka Gold Coast alt-pop artist Emily Hamilton, is set to return with her Cry EP this Friday, March 20, via Sydney’s etcetc Records. With assistance from producer Oscar Dawson (Ali Barter, Alex Lahey), the powerful 4-song set pulls inspiration from guitar-driven heroes The Kills, Metric, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as indie-pop visionaries like Grimes and Lykke Li. Ahead of Friday’s release, San Mei premiered the title track with Audiofemme alongside an in-depth interview. They state, “It’s no doubt that up-and-coming artists can struggle to find their footing or assert their identity in an increasingly crowded music industry...with her forthcoming EP Cry, San Mei set out to vent those frustrations, resulting in some of her most personal and relatable songwriting yet. Finally settling squarely on a dream pop indebted sound, Cry sees Hamilton coming into her own as a musician and producer, and with her unparalleled work ethic, there’s not much to get in her way.” Of the track, Hamilton offers:

“I wrote Cry when I realised it had gotten to the middle of the year already, and time was flying like crazy. This song is a reminder to myself to stop, breathe and appreciate this stage of my life and everything it has to offer.”

“Cry” follows the EP’s dreamy, synth-laden standout “Cherry Days,” which sees San Mei at the helm as producer for the first time with engineering assistance from longtime studio drummer and collaborator Michael McCartney. With last month’s release of the track, UK music blog FEISTY noted, “We’re long-time supporters of San Mei, so we’re excited that her alluring blend of dream pop, indie pop and synthpop is finally picking up the wider attention it deserves.” Previously, lead single, “Hard To Face,” also produced by Oscar Dawson, was featured on BBC Radio 1’s Indie Show with host Jack Saunders praising, “LOVE this from San Mei. Real kinda of like rebellious punk feel to it.” The new music is an exciting start to 2020 for San Mei, who had a breakthrough 2019 around the release of her Heaven EP. Last year saw the artist on the road for an extensive debut national headlining tour, as well as nine shows in six days at SXSW 2019 and national support performances for the likes of G. Flip, K.Flay, Ali Barter, and Jack River.

San Mei was set to return to SXSW again this year and arrived in the U.S. this past weekend ahead of nine performances this week in Austin that have since been canceled. Stay tuned for updates as future touring plans develop.
