The Grunions' surfy, jazzy and dangerously cool "El Swoncho" coming to the theater of your mind soon

"surfy, jazzy and dangerously cool"

El Swoncho could be a character in a Quentin Tarantino film. He would possibly wear an eye patch and be played with dramatic understated, dangerously cool flair by Benicio del Toro. In that movie, the perfect kind of surfy, jazzy and dangerously cool track by that name, El Swoncho by the Montreal surf band, The Grunions, would have to be included, maybe even be the theme song because it is seriously, seriously cool. Put some tight pants on, push play, and dance away.

The Grunions are Andrew Joncas (guitar), Christian Ingelevics (drums and percussion), Jeremy Lear (bass), and Nick Teehan (tenor sax, keys and synths).

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:

You may or may not be aware of the particular, ahem, habits of the small fish known as the grunion. But what’s most important here is that you understand these little fishies’ vibe: smooth, wild, and just the right amount of freaky. See where we’re going here?

Band members Andrew Joncas (guitar), Christian Ingelevics (drums and percussion), Jeremy Lear (bass), and Nick Teehan (tenor sax, keys and synths) met after being recruited for Les Surfants Terribles, the now-defunct Montreal surf band. Searching for an instrumentalist that could complete their quartet, Christian invited his friend Nick to join the band after learning he had recently relocated to Montreal.

The band’s style is inspired from the members’ work in Les Surfants Terribles. Continuing that tradition of reverb-drenched, 60s surf and psychedelic style, THE GRUNIONS have added their own personal spin. Influences include jazz, spy-core, blues, lounge, funk, and even a little bit of the harder sauce. The result? A very cinematic, epic, instrumental music reminiscent of the great prog artists of the 1970s (Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Yes) with catchy melodies, inspired solos, and danceable rhythms.

The album was recorded and mixed at Skybarn in Montreal on October 27th, 28th and 29th of 2019 by sound engineer Pietro Amato. It was recorded live “off the floor,” with many overdubs consisting of guitar and sax solos, as well as Ingelevics’ extensive percussion work. Mastering is by Ryan Morey at Grey Market Mastering.

SONG INFO:

THE GRUNIONS continue the tradition of reverb-drenched psychedelic rock of the '60's, while adding their own personal Surf-Jazz spin! "El Swoncho" pays tribute to the ever so rare sweater-poncho hybrid! You'll know it's about a real Swoncho and not just a Sears Swoncho when you hear it! Recorded live off the floor at Skybarn Studio in Montreal Canada in October of 2019 after a successful crowdfunding campaign, "El Swoncho" is but one of the many inspired, catchy and danceable songs on the bands debut album STAR FISH PRIME!
