"cause you fell heavy on me dear"
There is something about the track Sweet Sorrow by Vancouver based Baneful Town. When the song begins, the easy drum sway, the chill moving bass line, easy strums, mellow lead guitar and embracing, almost gospel, organ are very pretty but not remarkable in any way (really) but when Marshal Herridge (jazz bassist, singer songwriter) begins singing everything changes. His voice has a super engaging character. It is the way, he emphasizes certain words and pulls pronunciations in his own way. The earnest wistful nature of his voice feels like he is thinking, feeling each word. His melodies are beautiful too and once his voice and the endearing harmonies of Laura Fasanella (Montreal native, singer) with other vocal layers blend in and through the other elements, it completes the puzzle making Sweet Sorrow whole, vast and truly beautiful. It has a garden rock sway, the stirring and cool guitar work by Zach Bachand (a Montreal Folk, jazz picker) raises the song into something even more heavenly.
Baneful Town is the experimental singer-songwriter project of the aforementioned Marshal Herridge "strung together by drunken love songs". The trio is sitting on the release of their debut album "Lovers and Loners", waiting for the perfect time. Until then expect more singles to keep us all satisfied.

Baneful Town is an experimental singer-songwriter project strung together by drunken love songs.
The band consists of Marshal Herridge (a Vancouver born Jazz Bassist/Singer-Songwriter), Laura Fasanella (a Montreal native/singer), and Zach Bachand (a Montreal Folk/Jazz picker). The three met happenstance in Montreal where they discovered that they shared similar musical interests. Marshal is the songwriting force behind the band supplying the bare bones of songs most likely written in his bedroom on a rainy October evening. Laura fills in the missing spaces with her angelic voice and pleasant musical sense while Zach adds a much needed layer through his lyrical solo guitar playing ranging from “whale calls” to haunting bottleneck slide melodies. In its entirety, the project is spearheaded by the sonic input of Ottawa born and Montreal based Producer/Engineer Andre St.Denis (Bonneville Records) who has helped craft their unquestionably indie sound. The result is a wistful musical experience told through an unfiltered lens with a common nostalgic theme for love and longing. Some of the many artists that have inspired their taste for a more “lo-fi” sound and raw approach to songwriting include: Bright Eyes, Elliot Smith, Ryan Adams, Teitur, Big Star, WIlco/Jeff Tweedy and George Harrison.
Some local indie plugs have said: “Baneful Town is the title of an experimental project that brings together artists who love words and music. Written and produced in full complicity.” (Direct Actu - la culture pop dans les veins). “The Canadian Trio blends layers of sound and beauty almost effortlessly.” (EarToTheGroundMusic).
