Chazzy Lake (aka Charlie Hill), on the multi faceted Walls Of My Eyes from his "Sup, Circumstance" album wonders and wanders about in musical landscapes that start one way but become other things as the song progresses like he is walking down a long hallway and poking his head into wildly different parties. I really enjoy the layers of sounds that divert off and around the catchy drums and bass anchor. Hill narrates throughout, singing about understanding one's privilege with lyrics that can feel sometimes like random thoughts or question but are interconnected in the end.
"trying to understand my rite of passage
never asking enough how I can be better
getting rich comes with consequences"
and
"who's this officer trying to make criminals out of saints (?)
and in case you didn't know your enlightenment can skew your face"
At one point when his narration becomes a surprising kind of hippie rock jazz fusing of guitar lead and vocalizations mirroring them, "daah daah dah dah dowwww, dow", the song feels wonderfully skewed and more vague, "don't you ever be afraid to die" is the ending refrain.
In the end, Walls Of My Eyes, feels like one of those parties that you leave feeling happy but not sure what happened. I love the divergent places and the stabs of sounds that punctuate his vocal narration, guitar stabs will highlight emotions and only happen once. His musical sense is artfully odd and I love that.
