I seem to have odd skills. All of them, by the way, that don't make me any money. One of them is the ability to know if an artist or band will be great just by their name. When 'Port Lucian' was in the in box for submissions, I instinctively knew that I would find the music to be interesting and good just by the name. First off, I like the duality of "port" and the multiple pronunciations of "Lucian"and how they sound together.
Needless to say, I was spot on correct because Port Lucian, the bedroom pop creation of "queer, Asian American sweetheart" Portia Maidment, (based out of Philadelphia, PA) makes music that makes you better person for having heard it. Take for example the track, 'Keep My Knees Safe II'. It begins with Maidment self harmonizing, her beautiful croon awash in dashes of sadness, "I took a picture / You shouldn awash in dashes of sadness, "I took a picture / Y’t see / My kind of darkness / Its never leaves" which pulls you close in lovely ways and then another line in, "But I should know that its over…" and the song literally drops into a beat laden cacophony of bass, lush synths and this hook filled rhythm mostly comprised of singular notes (whether guitar, bass or synth) that are perfect in their simplicity like an amalgam of The Cure and Cocteau Twins or something in between.
In the 80's Port Lucian's music would of populated various John Hughes teen flicks because it is at once beautiful but darkly sad. 'Keep My Knees Safe II' is about "not being able to forget the things that haunt us most" and is the 4th track from Port Lucian's New EP, "Prince of Oddities" which will arrive September 18th on Z Tapes with cassette preorders available here : https://portlucian.bandcamp.com/album/prince-of-oddities-2
