TV FACE skewer Amazon on the gig economic punk defiant "Work Hard, Have Fun" (Official Video)

"there is no love in this place only time"

Post punk trio TV FACE from Lancaster UK maybe one of the hardest working bands out there. During 2020, a year that will go down in infamy (sadly) the band promised to release a single on the last Friday of every Month. A daredevil feat that would of been a challenge pre-pandemic but during quarantining and such, it has been a matter of pure determination, sleepless nights and shuttling recording equipment to the drummers home with precise instruction on how to use it. You can learn more about that on the chat I conducted with the band (see video below) but I digress.

This month's single is Work Hard, Have Fun and as the band shares is a song:

"about not having time to eat, shit or sleep in the gig economy. Lyrics inspired by interviews with people who work for Amazon; the title is lifted from the motto emblazoned at the entrance of every Amazon distribution centre."

Work Hard, Have Fun [which is featured on an EP of the same name (dropping today, August 28th) and also includes their May, June and July singles, ‘Orange Carbuncle’, ‘Happy Delusions’, and 'She Gets Old'] is a banger of a song containing TVFACE's signature sound which I would describe as divergent punk disarray. Love the absolutely insane guitar style that feels like surf punk on acid (thought a bit of Thee Oh Sees) with the heavy wang bar bends. The song shape shifts tempos and tones with a sort of math rock dance in the middle, kudos to the exquisite drumming and bass that anchors the track defiantly. Steve's vox, as I have mentioned before has the strident punk forward edges of a Jello Biafra (The Dead Kennedys) or Lance Hahn (Cringer).

TV FACE are from Lancaster, UK. They are sTeVe (vocals/guitar), Brigit (bass/vocals) and Neil (drums) and fully embrace the DIY aesthetic creating their masterful album artwork, T shirts and videos.

The monthly singles will all be compiled into three, limited edition, four track CD EPs released in April, August and December, with screen-printed artwork designed by sTeVe (lead singer, guitarist), and handmade. - TV FACE

Reviews:

It's just absolutely fantastic. It's music that smashes against walls and floors and ceilings and changes shape on each estatic, erratic, elastic bounce. ... An explosive, serrated slice of jagged schizoid noise pop, with those post-punk corners, kept sharp and on the edge of civility. ...It has the essential quirks and awkward pop sensibilities but also possesses that feverish, fearsome, hardcore swagger." (Louder Than War)

"angular musical shifts, front forward drums, heavy fresh cut dirty guitars and boy / girl vox with wide eyed diatribe'l vocal aesthetics. This sound, potent, full of chunky double time build ups and rebel yells is the kind of music I love, the kind of music you want to see LIVE in a small venue, so close that some sweat might catch you in the face.” (American Pancake)

A full-on, invigorating assault on the senses, you can almost smell the anger .. The raw beauty of the vocals and arrangement overwhelm you, with each wave of passionate noise taking the song to ever more giddy heights. If you like the multi-focused sonic experiments of Sonic Youth but also the inspirational energy of Manic Street Preachers, then this song is for you. (Analogue Trash)

“‘Yarns’ is built around cool guitar riff after cool guitar riff. The mood, however, is more in line with the US 80s alternative bands such as Dinosaur Jr, Pixies or Sonic Youth. But don’t worry, TV Face do their own thing here. The lead vocals are gutsy without being aimless shouting. The backing female vocals have a Kim Deal vibe, but add a sense of melody, intricacy and interest ... brilliant.” (When The Horn Blows)
