Hannah Lee Thompson's sadly drawn deeply beautiful "Handsome Ugly"

"I let her down when I put her above me"

Hannah Lee Thompson knows how to take her feelings, express them in her poetry that she puts to music. The result is oftentimes sadly drawn but so damn beautiful as well. On her latest Handsome Ugly, from her upcoming EP "Handsome", the Baltimore based singer-songwriter "tells a story of questioning self-worth through the lens of a queer love song" and afterward you want to give her a big hug. The song barely over 2 minutes gets to the point right away:

"She is handsome
and I am ugly
I'm not so sure how
I got so lucky"

A plaintive beat and sad dreamy guitars drop in courtesy of alt-country band Crisco Dreams and Joe Beerman of Sipper. The lead lines, bending and sparkling in interestingly divergent ways add emotional beautiful weight. Thompson's vocal delivery is perfectly poised somewhere between self loathing and deep longing. Her melodies here (to me) warrant a longer song but then 'Handsome Ugly' is perfect as it is, just like Hannah.
