Groovy Daughter and the groove driven deep emotional weight of "HARSH"

The world at large can be harsh enough so allowing our inner world to be harsh, to punch ourselves is a sad and losing battle. Groovy Daughter fronted by Cranberran art pop singer songwriter, Nicole Wilde-Carr, is a groove driven emo indie pop track with trip hop affections anchoring Wild-Carr's fluid beautiful earthy vocal aesthetic. Every word, every syllable, carries a deep emotional weight which can be sometimes unusual for this genre.

“In the time that I’ve been writing and performing, I’ve been constantly growing and changing. Recently, I think I’ve moved on from the heaviness in some of my earlier songs, and I’ve felt more driven to create something that still tackles these heavy conversations with myself, but that tackles them in a warmer and happier way.”

In a social media fueled world, one where millennials seem to be tethered to their phone as if it were a permanent extension of their body, negative messages can coalese in the brain as young people constantly compare their looks, their personna, their being and place in life to others. The detrimental effects of social media are just now being understood in a social scientific way.

“I have always struggled with being too self-critical. It took a lot of introspection, but now I’m at a point where I know I don’t always have to trust that negativity. I feel like this song shows that introspection, and the little conversations I’ve had with myself that’s got me to the happier place I’m at today.”

Fronted by Canberran art-pop icon Nicole Wilde-Carr, Groovy Daughter has built an unparalleled reputation for immersive soundscapes and relentlessly vulnerable live performances. December 17th marks the release of Groovy Daughter’s latest single “HARSH”. Drawing inspiration from emerging neo-soul stars Syd and Arlo Parks, “HARSH” is a stark change of course towards a warmer, trip-hop inspired sound.

“HARSH” tackles the deep-rooted self-criticism that has become commonplace among millennials in an era of social media dependence and industry doubt.

“I have always struggled with being too self-critical. It took a lot of introspection, but now I’m at a point where I know I don’t always have to trust that negativity. I feel like this song shows that introspection, and the little conversations I’ve had with myself that’s got me to the happier place I’m at today.”

2019 saw a Groovy Daughter reach new heights, landing a series of high-profile shows with Slum Sociable, Thandi Phoenix, and Groovin the Moo. In the wake of the 2020 pandemic, Groovy Daughter doubled-down on her emotionally captivating live performances with a series of online shows, culminating in a performance on the Isol-Aid line up alongside Camp Cope, Alex the Astronaut, and Courtney Barnett.

Hot off the heels of these successes, Groovy Daughter teamed up with fellow Canberra icon Citizen Kay to write and produce “HARSH”, the first step in her imminent rebirth.

“HARSH was a really exciting and invigorating track to make. I came to Kay with a brief idea and from there the song kind of took its own path. It was also the first time I brought my bassist Brodie Heidtmann in to record and it really opened all of us up to this creatively freeing space that I’ve never felt before. I think all of us were surprised to hear the song embody the carefree, poppy flow that it has. To see my sound progress and change like that was so exciting, and I’m just so excited to see where it will take me next.”
