Kevin Healey and the space rock fusion reflections of "Bedroom Mirror" from the "X Minus One" EP

"down in the basement where the music's clearer..."

Not content to jump on any particular trend or dabble in current musical tropes, listening to Kevin Healey aka Eddie Kite feels like an excursion into music that can jump genres and generational divides. Take, for example, the first track, "Bedroom Mirror", from his 2020 EP "X Minus One" EP, as sole singer-songwriter and one man band, programmer ad producer Healey does not (to me) fall into the trap of over layering, of doing too much. From the guitars sounds, complex bass lines, proggy beats and Healey's vocal aesthetic you feel a touch hearkening back to 80's art rock / blendo rock of bands like Steely Dan, (80's) Bowie and Be Bop Deluxe. As the bass line takes over in a foggy space haze as chamber pop / rock affections float around the song highlights the sci-fi funk aspects that were always there underneath, a percolation of 70's sci-fi / space funk creations like The Undisputed Truth (an outfit put together by Motown producer Norman Whitfield).

"Bedroom Mirror" falls away to other sounds that feel like folk inspired post rock "Wake Up Blind" and the beautiful "Lies We Believe" steeped with space rock / glam affections. The rock fusion of the title track, "X Minus One", floating in a delicious psych rock funk meteor shower and "Three Glass Ceilings" that somehow has a late 60's Beatle-esque kaleidoscope.

Trippy stuff man. Trippy stuff.
