Madison Beer and the audacious empowering punch pop decry of "BOYSHIT"

In "BOYSHIT" (via Epic Records) Madison Beer's croons "I don't speak Boyshit" and, yes, the so called "language of the sexes" has been legendary fodder for comics and artists of all sorts for decades. In today's emotional and non binary gender landscape maybe the notion feels sort of antiquated and maybe it has more to do with once you are in a relationship with someone else, no matter what sex (or non sex) you are, a hundred insecurities or psycho sexual (yes I meant to write that) buttons seem to be pushed making you NOT you, making you a version of the you you're are supposed to be.

As much as Beer doesn't speak Boyshit, I, as a lover of music, don't speak this kind of pop really but it is the things in Beer's track that is not the typical kind of "popshit" (that usually does not make it on this humble blog) that tugs at my shirt collar, makes my head bob and feels divergent within this genre. Beer not only coalesces the most relatable things about relationships, especially toxic ones that we have all had or are in (you know who you are) as to suck us in with the lyrics, smart but skewering, as well as Beer's demanding pop vocal aesthetic, flow and bounce.

The beginning of "Boyshit" with the sort of audacious Spanish tango flair that sounds like a dramatic overture in a Quentin Tarantino flick before the Bride dispenses deadly girl power with her Katana sword (apparently she doesn't put up with "Boyshit" either) has a gravitational pull. The pop thump beat trope in tow, Beer has a perfect vocal aesthetic for this dispensation. The synth bass line is incredibly hooky and the background production from synths that sound like guitar lasers, to that cheeky grind house caustic string sounds give it a divergent patina and lasting pop gravitas. Vastly more interesting here than the "incomparable (??)" Billie E.

Beer shares:

“’BOYSHIT’ is one of the last songs I recorded for my album, and it was just kind of a build up after this really long year.” says Madison. “It’s simply about knowing your worth and when to leave a situation. With the play on “bullshit” I figured it was the perfect time to use the age old saying about an immature or disrespectful boyfriend, ‘he’s not a man, he’s a boy,’ but it then flourished into more. This isn’t as simple as a childish man, it’s deeper than that. Anyone can behave in a “BOYSHIT” manner and I think there’s something to be said about knowing when enough is enough and when you’re truly just feeding into nonsense, I think a lot of that is knowing your worth. This song is meant to uplift and inspire people, of all genders, to know when it’s time to stop putting up with boyshit.”

“BOYSHIT” is from Madison Beer's forthcoming debut album, Life Support, out 26th February 2021.
