Oliver Marson and the torn new wave post punk glam set list of "To The Nines" (Official Video)

"Star struck girl made of stone"

From the first line, "Star struck girl made of stone...", that tumble from Oliver Marson's lips in a poised theatrical way, part aloof with maybe even faint drops of derision like an early morning dew, the lushly fun "To The Nines" feels like a broken homage to 80's new wave but pushed through a punk blender. The song surprises, shifts gears, feels at once serious but kitschy too.

Sonically, London based Marson flows effortlessly through surf punk tones, to electronic new wave places, to post punk dance flavors. I couldn't help but think an amalgam of Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley (early years when they had harder edges circa 79 /80) and ABC's Martin Fry in Marson's droll vocal persona. He seems to veer into an askew fusion of proto punk and post tones to ever hit the romantic stride of, let's say, a Roxy Music but I like that. I mean if you implanted a boogie jag into "To The Nines" it could feel glam enough to be a T-Rex song.

The Official Video is wonderfully cheesy DIY stuff. This song is growing on me upon the fourth listen. Maybe late tonight I will pop up clips of Nick Cage's "Valley Girl", turn the sound off and play "To The Nines" over and over as an alternative sound track until I fall asleep. It might inspire some wild dreams.

Oliver Marson’s music is full of surprises. What starts off as a formulaic pop song can often veer off into something completely different half way through. Marson wants to pull the rug from underneath the listener’s to keep them guessing and constantly on their toes. He has the ability to provoke, haunt and lift in one song. In Marson, we have a shadowy new wave rocker for the modern age.
