"Why Paul McCartney's RAM is the first Indie Pop album" - Elliot Roberts

"an album that blends many genres together"

Was RAM by Paul McCartney (released in '71) the first Indie Pop album? You Tuber Elliot Roberts makes a compelling argument. I am new to Roberts having stumbled upon his channel and as much as I love to argue and be the contrarian, I found his interesting take here so engaging. He perfectly dissects and explores the origins and definition of "indie pop" as a genre and his thoughts on RAM which was unbelievably eviscerated by the critics at the time.

"If you listen to RAM with modern ears each track sounds like it could of been recorded by some of the greatest alternative and indie pop artists the genre has ever produced. Too Many People could easily blend into Arcade Fires' "The Suburbs", "Three Legs" sounds like the White Stripes at their strappiest, "Smile Away" is the song the Back Keys wish they had written, "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" is like MGMT, Flaming Lips and Of Montreal all rolled up into one. The McCartney (1970) album may be where the spirit of indie and its ethos began but RAM (1971) represents the genesis of the indie sound and style. The entire album reads like the D.N.A of indie music."  - Elliot Roberts

I will be checking out Elliot Roberts mini-dissertations again.
