Leon Ampersand and the indie art pop tart- "These Blue Skies, They Are a-Callin'"

"your anemic glow, the cold wind blows so apropos"

"These Blue Skies, They Are a-Callin'" from Leon Ampersand's EP "Milquetoast Bleeder" is a fanciful sort of indie art pop tart. Whether person or project, Leon Ampersand's artistic milieu could be one of the cynical observer and not only because he seems a wee bit secretive but that it seems he might couch his own world view or longings through other's eyes. For example,"These Blue Skies, They Are a-Callin'" press notes indicate that "This is a song about Maris Crane sung from the perspective of Niles Crane from the TV show Frasier" which, to me, feels smart and somehow hysterical given some of the lyrical content which itself has that sort of Mid-Atlantic air, the feeling of one being an emotional poseur.

If the song might be putting on a façade, the melodies and sonic accoutrement that adorn this mask is trippy, cool and pop charming. In some of the melodies I get a sense of Elliot Smith and the under-rated 90's heyday'd Michael Penn. In the end, Leon Ampersand, man or project stirs up crisp, acerbic pop every time.
