PREMIERE: daysormay and the dynamic pop melancholia of "Everything Is Changing"

"that hold me back until I find my breath again"

From the onset, "Everything Is Changing", from Vancouver based alt-pop trio daysormay feels deeply entrenched in the longing and angst of youth in uncertain times. At 20 years old, singer Aidan Andrews, along with twin brothers Carson and Nolan Bassett (on bass and drums respectively) have been creating music together for 8 years. Some bands rise and fall within that time frame but don't expect that to happen to daysormay. The musical and emotional dynamism inherent in their sound suggests a thoughtfulness in their approach. As someone who swims in more post punk places, the track hooked me in almost instantly because of Andrews vocal aesthetic and propensity to write lyrics and melodies that pull you in. The band self produced this track in a brilliantly nuanced way. As it starts off tenderly on ukulele, the tone is wistful and sad. Distant in the mix are vocals that suggest past memories. When sparse piano and a lush vocal mix drops you think that the song is going to kind of blow up but thankfully it does not. Instead it floats in surreal places with synths that feel more like vintage French organs. Nice evocative touches and when the song does become larger, with a slapping beat and lo-fi (on high) synths, the sad emotional patina wraps around you. The songs coda becomes, once again, stripped down but askew in it's mix. In the end, what you have is a pop forward tone but with touches of divergent indie pop, bedroom pop, melancholia and other styles, a crashing of tones as disparate as artists like Lonas, The Wrecks, XXXTENTACION (RIP) and Unknown Mortal Orchestra coming together at once.

Of the track history and what informs it, Aidan Andrews shares:

"-Everything Is Changing- is an idea that's been around for a while. Carson and I started the chords on a ukulele when we were on a camping trip back in 2017. We had all just graduated high school about a month before, and, even though I knew we were jumping right into music, I still felt like I had just swam over a drop-off into the deep end. The first verse and the chorus were written in that period and headspace, but it was shelved for about another two years.

We rediscovered the demo in early 2019. We had just become a trio, and everything felt like we were floating over the deep end again. The lyrics really resonated with us, we all just stared at each other after listening to it. It was like we'd written it for our future selves.

All the production and mixing on the song was done by us, it was a super DIY process. We wanted to preserve the feeling we put into it back in 2017, so there's even still some stuff from the first demo in the final version."
