Whispering Sons' shattering post punk anxiety attack "Surface"

Step into "Surface" by Belgian neo dark punk band, Whispering Sons, with is kinetic chaos and Fenne Kuppens deep resonant upfront vox laced with fear and alienation and you feel like you fell headfirst into an anxiety attack. I absolutely am enamored with the fertile proto punk period of the late 70's / early 80's and Whispering Sons has that go for broke, wildly artful, convention crushing sound. The synth / bass / drums engine feels somewhat like Devo, the rabid guitar work feels somewhat like Gang of Four and Fenne Kuppens darkly drawn vocal aesthetic baritone which sometimes seems to growl without growling and stands out like an utter surprising beacon somehow (and I am not sure why) made me think of an amalgam of Nico and Patti Smith. Maybe it is the passion, the inner turmoil but outwardly aloof layers of armour. In any event, Kuppens has one of the most unique vocal presentations I have ever heard.

The sheer dark drama of "Surface" is so compelling as is the Official Video. Of both the band shares:

"The theme of isolation in a cyclical and circling world was used by combining images of a woman singing in bright white light alongside flashing sceneries of destruction, a lost city, stone formations and rough structured landscapes. It’s the result of an instinctive search by photographer Sybren Vanoverberghe and filmmaker Jonas Hollevoet for images in which no humanity can be found."
