Coral Grief and the dense emotional forest of "Crumble"

"not a number, not a glitch..."

Seattle is blessed with have a lot of beautiful trees and being the home base for Coral Grief, the dream pop project of vocalist / bass player Lena Farr-Morrissey and multi-instrumentalist Sam Fason. On the dreamily askew "Crumble" the sense is more dangerous and dark than what first appears. I love the vocal aesthetic here that within the lush layers that feels sort of emotionally aloof or muted. The serious tones are offset by lyrics that charm and perplex , "not a lover, not a witch, as she thinks in perfect pitch why don't you try to be here on time" and their are references to "spells" and "crumbling bells". It feels at once improvisational and like those dense Seattle forests, beautiful but invitingly spooky at night. The synth work only feeds into the surrealist bent and the pervasive sense of reticence and sadness.

Coral Grief is the Seattle based dream pop project of vocalist/bassist Lena Farr-Morrissey and multi-instrumentalist Sam Fason. The duo creates expansive soundscapes on their forthcoming self-titled EP, out May 14th. Rich guitars, glowing synths and ethereal vocals swirl around a skeletal drum loop to create a textured, intricate sound that is experimental, playful, and catchy. Recorded entirely at home during lockdown and mixed by Briana Marela, the band used the limitations of home recording to their advantage, and experimented heavily with tone and textural elements to create a unique ambient atmosphere. The band's debut single "Crumble" is already gathering buzz, and has already received airtime on KEXP.
