Grundeis and the dangerous dark wave romance of "Vain" (Official Video)

"Here's the guilt you wanna hide"

The dramatic frenetic dark wave of "Vain" by Hamburg's Grundeis has artful power anchored in equal parts heavy post punk and Goth pop. There is a romantic dangerous element to the atmosphere they create cast in the thick discordant sustains and staccato synth runs. Laura, Nils and Tomas found each other in 2018. The stripped down nature of their sound feels at once intimate and super lush. The bass heavy drive and pearly guitar affections did have me flash on iconic sounds (The Cure in particular). It is a sound that is highly intoxicating, highly cinematic and Laura's vocal aesthetic (in and of itself) is particularly engaging. Her voice, her breath and the moments of pause carry such an intensely self aware and open emotionality that makes you eagerly grasp every word she utters. When the song erupts, you want, you need to be in a venue watching them live.

GRUNDEIS drown with multilayered guitars in a melancholic abyss driven by pulsating beats and haunting vocals. They opened shows for Bleib Modern, Isolated Youth, Suir, Jaguwar and Ezra Furman (among others). At the end of 2020 they released their first single BLEACH - a fulminant noise-post-punk song. The second single VAIN from the upcoming debut album Amygdala is going to be released on the 12th of March 2021. The band members Laura, Nils and Tomas found each other in Hamburg in 2018.
