joe p and the bittersweet indie rock intoxicant "Fighting In the Car"

"the inmate loves the prison guard"

Asbury Park, New Jersey singer-songwriter, musician, Joe P, knows how to tell stories that suck you in. On the exquisite rock indie cajole "Fighting In The Car" he deals out golden tickets. He creates a song, a lyrically charming and heavy track that feels minimal but is highly, highly produced. He manages to outdo Weezer in the ability to stack layers of indie rockisms (and tropes) but drench them in emotional weight. It is an artifice where you feel the weight of the storyteller over the story but it is done so fucking well that you gladly embrace it. Here Joe P somehow inhabits the same sort of aesthetic as an amalgam of Jack White, the aforementioned Weezer and Damon Albarn (Blur). Smart, poetic, intoxicating indie rock. Be careful or you might become an addict.

Of the Song:

joe p says: “Fighting in the Car” started with some notes randomly written down at 4am one night. I really liked how the words sat next to each other and supplied a sort of motion/action -based imagery with just a few words. I had the riff from the verse that felt sort of bouncy and confident, so when the chorus came, I wanted that to capture the contrasting imagery I had in my head that stemmed from the song title. I was trying to channel what it feels like to be willing to go through all of the most difficult/painful parts of something because even those moments are better than the best parts of other things. Like opting to go to hell if it means you could be with someone as opposed to going to heaven without them.”

Of the Video:

“I just wanted to do something simple and hopefully unique. Anthony Yebra (director) and I decided to not make a plan and just go film something. So we found a location and him and I started shooting what we thought was going to be one of several angles. We reviewed the film and decided it felt better to us as a one-take video than a standard, multiple-angle “rock video.” It’s probably too crazy, but we love it."
