Paola Bennet and the beautiful eruption of "In This Body" (Official Video)

As I write my comments about native Bostonian / New York based singer songwriter Paola Bennet's evocative personal tug and war bit of sonic drama "In This Body" I think about the dozen times I have listened to it and how relatable it is. On September 26th, 2017 my wife was involved in a terrible car accident piled into by someone who should of not been driving. Extricated from twisted metal with the jaws of life she has since been in daily pain from nerve damage. Bennet amid wistful guitar lines that hang in the air like early morning fog sings about the disconnect between your being and the vessel that hold you. Her vocal aesthetic, beautiful and comforting while sometimes mournfully sad floats over dynamic sounds that build slowly and then erupt in surprisingly hard ways. The fury comprised of rock guitar and whirlwind drumming and heavy synths feels indie rock with art rock affections.

Of the song Bennet shares:

“In This Body” is a dark, melancholy snapshot of my experience with chronic illness. It spotlights that sense of being a stranger in your own body, and having your very real pain questioned by people around you. Haunting vocals lift the electric, kick-driven production, building steadily until the howling, caustic outro: “Say I’m fine, I feel crazy / Don’t call me crazy.”

"In This Body" reminds me that each of us are unique entities of flesh and blood and some life force that is somehow connected to it. That as empathetic as we can be, we can never, NEVER, know how someone feels (really) so discounting their feelings even for a second is a terrible thing to do. Oh, by the way, my wife who has been on dozens of pain pills and more finally had a spinal surgery less than three weeks ago. Three more weeks in a neck collar and then 6 weeks of physical therapy. Things are going to be better.

The accompanying Official Video was shot and directed by Iris Lee and features that acting talents of Jill Galbraith.
