"you don't understand me like I want you too..."
I love voices. I don't mean only in songs but voices in general. I couldn't tell you how often I have complimented people's voices throughout my life. Sometimes it takes people aback but a rich voice with a lot of character is worth noting and, well, people appreciate it. When I heard Nashville based Sara Bug's vocal aesthetic on the indie country folk rock "The Beholder" it woke me up, shot a tinge of adrenaline through me. It is unique, it possesses a twang that one associates (for the most part) with a deep resonant country voice but Sara's is youthful, in a higher register that even suggests a child like countenance. Her self harmonies add to the complexity, to the nuances of her voice. The melody and kind of pop western country sway feels nostalgic, feels a bit 70's esque when country would easily cross over to pop audiences. I feel a kind of bohemian hippie psychedelia as well blending throughout the country indie or garden rock tones highlighted by the Fender Rhodes-esque keys and the bending guitar lines. Cool.
Sara Bug is releasing (what I think is her debut) eponymous full length album due to drop May 14th, 2021 and "The Beholder" is track 8. She shares:
"The Beholder, one of the most recently written songs on the album, is me admitting that I care too much what others think of me. As I get older I want to learn not to let the opinions of others play a part in the choices I make. In this song I describe my deep desire to distance myself from society, simplify my life, and let go of pressure and expectations. Quite literally, I am saying that I can’t wait to buy land and move to the country. I’ve kind of arrived at a new chapter in life with this song." - Sara Bug
