The Tiptons Sax Quartet & Drums "December's Dance"

"from New Orleans “second – line” to jazz, Afro-Cuban to Balkan, Klezmer and beyond"

Seattle's The Tiptons Sax Quartet & Drums have me dancing / vibing in my socks in the kitchen. Ok, not a pretty picture for sure but "December's Dance", a decidedly Bebop infused groove cooker, composed and arranged by baritone player Tina Richerson is as fluidly intricate as it is askewly beautiful and cool. In fact, as I listen and twirl to the walking (quickly) sax bass lines and the drone of sax harmonies, there is an ultra cool drum breakdown / solo and orchestrated build up that feels like a sharkskin suited, shiney wing-tipped ballet of funk, jazz hybridity transforming into a funky wall to wall tap dancing gang fight.

[THE TIPTONS SAXOPHONE QUARTET & DRUMS are an internationally renowned all-female saxophone quartet with drums, celebrating over 30 years as a band. Amy Denio (alto sax, clarinet, voice) is joined by co-leader Jessica Lurie (soprano/alto/tenor sax, voice), Sue Orfield (tenor sax, voice), Tina Richerson (baritone sax, voice) and Robert Kainar (drums, percussion) from Salzburg, Austria. The Tiptons’ material ranges from micro-Big Band to Gospel, Bluegrass to Balkan, whimsical Chamber Jazz, and nocturnal Funk to Free Jazz Improvisation using saxophones, clarinet, their voices, drums, and inventive percussion to create a genre-busting ‘world soul’ sound.]

The band has spanned a 30 year run and their 14th album "Wabi Sabi" just dropped (4/2/21).
