Edwin and the cinematic folk sweep of "Big River" featuring Samantha Crain

"this here’s the end"

"Big River", from Edwin's latest LP, "West" begins with dreamy non-descript sounds that suggest past days or a step into an unreal plain, acoustic strumming follows centering anyone listening as layers of vocal harmonies and wistful drones take over. The tone, feeling for a musical nerd like myself feels somehow like mid-90's dream theater, sort of Radiohead-esque. Then Matthew Boll's stately vocals come in, crushing and expanding the tones in an evocative folk way with 70's folk (and broad pop) affections. Boll's deep resonant sound has a formidable countenance crossing genres and generations, I am sensing a commanding amalgam of singers like Lee Hazelwood or Till Lindemann, or Nick Cave or Ville Valo. Boll's aesthetic adds a depth of character and as the song shuffles with waves of wanderlust it take you over. The cinematic sweep is solidified by the introduction of Samantha Crain's equally earthy vox. The duet feels brief but beautiful and the outro, an artful jammy build up of sounds, is a wonderful coda to the track (and, for me, an intro to the album).

Edwin is brothers, singer songwriters, musicians Jacob and Matthew Boll who recorded "West" remotely, Matthew from the wilds of Michigan and Jacob from Los Angeles. The acoustic project grew in unimaginable ways as friends and collaborators contributed to the album from their own respective locations.

Jacob and Matthew Boll began recording the songs for West in the beginning of 2020. Every song from the record was recorded remotely, Matthew from the wilderness of Michigan and Jacob from sunny L.A. What started as a small 'acoustic' project quickly expanded as their friends and collaborators joined them from their own homes, recording over the internet, to contribute to the album.
