Holy Dave Clark Five on heroin... (boy that descended quickly). Listening, enjoying the proto punkish, NYC busker garage rockish "Open All Night" by Brooklyn based Women Of The Night, comprised of Jordan D’Arsie (guitar, vox) and Kyubae Lee (drums), and I am reveling in D'Arsie's vocal scowl. It is a great voice, one that is not afraid to chew the scenery and spit it out. The overall sonic aesthetic pulls from 50's sort of western country rock / rockabilly meets 60's garage punk, a rebellious freewheeling musical streak to say the least.
"Open All Night", as the first single from the band's upcoming sophomore album "Sub Rosa", set to drop late in June (2021) on Declared Goods and on vinyl from UK label Heavy Soul, was written at a bar called Better Days (in the Lower Eastside). On the surface, the song might feel like your typical rock song, sexual innuendos and all, but in a world full of side hustles (emotional and otherwise) it might be more informed along lines of relationship survival. D'Arsie expounds on the song's back story:
“In an evening writing session thinking about the long days and longer nights, the lengths people go to keep a something alive, make something work or just put the broken pieces back together.” D’Arsie continues “It’s a semi auto-biographical look back at the gas station days. Customers coming and going, the constant flow of questionable ways and means. Keep a straight face, treat em with love, we got what you need and we're Open all Night.”
The sound is raw and artfully rootsy. Looking forward to hearing "Sub Rosa".
