Hadnot Creek and the flipped indie folk rock reflection of "Come On Henry"

"you need to put that bottle down and get a hold of yourself..."

The wonderfully candid "Come On Henry" by Charlottesville, Virginia indie folk rock outfit Hadnot Creek is informed by a character named Henry that Robert Sawrey created. I don't know if Henry is derived from a flesh and bone real person or an amalgam of many or from a reflection in the mirror or bits of all combined. I know that everyone knows a "Henry" or, um, has been one. Sawry shares:

"Over the past few years I'd written several songs revolving around a character named Henry. He does the best he can but he's never going to be anyone's idea of a role model. Let's just say he's carrying around some serious baggage. I decided to turn this song around and tell it from a viewpoint other than his own. Leah Ruth had contributed a background vocal on our last record, Hard World. When I wrote it I envisioned us doing a duet being a duet but once she started singing I knew the song was hers and hers alone. Many thanks to Leah and to Lee Sargent for helping make this song happen as well to Zach Samel and Carter Litvinas."

Sawrey's artistic decision works so well and I love the sort of downplayed kind of bohemian folk angles on the sound. Ruth embodies the song's story with a vocal aesthetic which feels somber but in some way aloof too, like her shields are up. The trancy kind of Mazzy Star guitar tones that get nicely heavy as the shifting drums mix it up while piano embellishments draws you willingly into the drama. Besides guest vocalist, Leah Ruth and former Clap Your Hands Say Yeah guitarist, Lee Sargent, "Come On Henry" was produced by Zach Samel and mastered by Patrick Klem at Klem Sound. Hadnot Creek's third album, "Blue Lights", will be released in the fall of 2021.

Hadnot Creek was formed in 2016 by singer-songwriter Robert Sawrey. Its other members are multi-instrumentalist Zach Samel, guitarists Damir Kajan, Carter Litvinas and singer, Lucy Haden Smith.
