Picnic Lightning and the cavernous rock against rock of "Pre-Pangea"

"Pre-Pangaea, before the split, You and I must have collided, oh shit!"

Picnic Lightning from Fort Worth, Texas, a self described southern gothic psych band are offering up "Pre-Pangea" recorded, incidentally, pre-pandemic and it occurred to me that if Picnic Lighting would of existed prior to the moment in 1912 when German meteorologist Alfred Wegener coined Pangea's existence as part of his theory of continental splits and drifts then the song would likely be called Pre-Pangaea and played pre-electric guitar. I think I just blew part of my mind even though what I wrote makes no sense except to say that Picnic Lighting has a raw unfettered sound that I suppose could of existed back then.

"Pre-Pangea" is gloriously massive. The galloping guitar rhythm, punching, sliding bass lines, charging drums have a majesty. The vox wailing in between cavernous fanning lead guitar sustains talk about strange formations, fault lines crumbling, new bodies boiling, "Twixt thrust, and rift, and bearing witness" and tectonic time lines. Metaphorically or not there is a gritty, rock against rock abrasiveness here and seemingly pre-synthesizer which, in 2021, is a refreshing thing indeed.

Picnic Lightning is Thomas Ketchersid (guitar, vox), Cole Watkins (guitar, vox), John Cope (bass, vox) and Cameron Navarro (drums, vox).
